Let’s face it. We’re getting fatter. Maybe not you personally, but as a nation the United States is bigger than ever and not in terms of its geography either. People’s lives are busier than ever and it is all too easy to head for the McDonald’s drive-thru, order a pizza, or buy a bag of chips in the checkout line when you’re hungry. While it is certainly true that overweight people have to deal with the social stigma of obesity, the primary cause for concern is people’s health. Obesity is the leading cause of diabetes in the world. A growing number of obese children are getting diabetes and other diseases related to their weight.
If you want to avoid having an obese child, steps can be taken even before he or she is born. While many pregnant women think that gaining more weight is better for their unborn children, the fact of the matter is that moms-to-be should do their best to eat a healthy, balanced diet. This does not mean that they should starve themselves; instead, pregnant women should carefully choose what they eat in order to promote good nutrition and health for themselves and their babies. This is a good idea even if you are not pregnant.
Young children likewise should learn early the difference between good and bad foods. Often children who learn to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables at an early age continue to do so into adulthood. Likewise, children who eat primarily pizzas, hamburgers, and potato chips will most likely continue to do so into adulthood. Sodas are fine as an occasional treat, but sugary sodas should be lumped with other dessert items such as ice cream and cake as something special rather than something to have with every meal. One can of soda has more than seven tablespoons of sugar – definitely not something any of us needs to consume on a regular basis. Naturally, if you want your children to eat and drink healthy, you will also have to do so in order to set a good example.
Since lifelong habits begin in childhood, expose your children to healthy foods from the start. Use the food pyramid to help make wise choices that will lead to a balanced, healthy diet. It is okay to occasionally give your children something unhealthy as a special treat, but ultimately it is up to you to protect your child’s future by showing them the right way to eat right.
